Ganybu Infrastructure, Housing & Services

Laynha delivers housing, infrastructure, essential and municipal services to the homelands through the Ganybu Infrastructure and Housing Services (GIHS) department.

GIHS receives core funding support from the Northern Territory Government’s Department of Community Services. Project-based support has also been received from the Australian Government's Department of Social Services, through the Remote Indigenous Energy Program, Aboriginals Benefits Account, and the Homelands Sustainable Living Project.

Community housing include maintenance and repairs for over 150 houses in 25 homelands, housing about 1200 Yolngu residents.

GIHS provides plumbing, carpentry and electrical services to communities, and supports households’ applications for the NTG Homelands Extra Allowance, which are integrated within Community Action Plans. GIHS is also involved in the construction of capital works such as offices and other facilities for the homelands

Civil Works includes maintaining 540 kilometres of minor roads connecting to the Central Arnhem Road and 24 airstrips, and supporting ongoing access to remote homeland communities which can be challenging during and after the wet season. GIHS owns and operates an extensive Caterpillar earth moving machinery fleet to deliver civil works services for both internal and external contract service requirements.

Municipal and Essential Services include a broad range of activities across homeland communities:
  • maintaining bores, tanks, water supply
  • power generation and reticulation systems, including diesel generator sets and solar ‘Bushlight’ systems in homeland communities
  • supporting community health through rubbish collection and sewage disposal, dog control, internal roads and drainage, and vegetation and firebreak management
  • delivering power and water access to community infrastructure, including schools, training centres, offices, stores, Yirralka Ranger facilities and Laynha Health clinics. These are fee for use operations, designed for fair and sustainable service provision across the homelands.
Transport and Logistics include provision of diesel fuel to support municipal operations and other Laynhapuy internal services providers such as Health and Yirralka Rangers, and coordination of freight logistics across the homelands. Transport, Salvage and Logistic contract services are also available utilising the diverse range of crane trucks, low load float and tilt tray assets.

Mechanical Workshop providing fee for service work for internal and external clients. The mechanics and trainees in the workshop take great pride in keeping Laynha’s large and diverse range of vehicles and machinery operating, to support the homeland residents and partners.
